Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan to unveil 125-ft statue of Ambedkar statue

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is set to inaugurate a 125-foot statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at Swaraj Maidan in Vijayawada on Friday evening.

The statue, built at an approximate cost of Rs 404 crore, is elevated on an 81-foot pedestal, resulting in a monumental height of 206 feet. Referred to as the 'Statue of Social Justice,' the installation will prompt the renaming of Swaraj Maidan to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

In a social media post on Thursday, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy stated, "This towering statue reflects Dr. Ambedkar’s immense contribution to India’s social, economic, political, and gender landscapes. Even a century later, his visionary words echo, steering the nation toward progress. Recognizing his enduring principles, our government has woven them into our ‘Navaratnalu initiatives. This January 19, join us in celebrating this momentous occasion and recommitting to Ambedkar’s legacy of equality and justice."

The project encompasses various features, including a park featuring the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Experience Centre, a convention center with a seating capacity of 2,000, a food court, a children's play area, water bodies, a musical fountain, and extensive walking paths, according to officials. The 125-foot statue, constructed entirely in India, is crafted from a steel frame and adorned with bronze cladding. The statue's construction involved approximately 400 metric tonnes of stainless steel and 120 metric tonnes of bronze. The 81-foot pedestal building is designed in the style of Kalachakra Maha Mandal, reflecting Buddhist architecture.

Commencing in December 2021, the project has been executed through a collaboration between the Social Welfare Department, serving as the nodal agency, and the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, both under the purview of the state government.
