Renowned Classical Singer Prabha Atre
Renowned classical singer Prabha Atre, a three-time Padma awardee, passed away at the age of 92 due to a heart attack on Saturday. The veteran singer was scheduled to participate in a program in Mumbai on the same day but suffered a heart attack and was taken to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where she passed away before reaching the hospital.
Expressing grief, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "Her leaving the world is very painful; Indian music will always be indebted to her. I pay my heartfelt tribute to her, and may God give strength to her family to bear this loss." Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also mourned her demise, stating that it marked the end of a glorious era of classical music.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra directed the administration to perform the last rites of the singer with full state honors. Prabha Atre's relatives, currently abroad, are expected to return to the country, and her last rites will be conducted in Pune on Tuesday.
Prabha Atre, born on September 13, 1932, in Pune, received several prestigious awards, including Padma Shri in 1990, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2022. She was honored with the Atal Sanskriti Award on December 25, 2022. Atre started singing classical songs at a young age, had a brief stint as a singing stage actress, and played roles in Marathi theatre classics. Known for her contribution to popularizing Indian classical vocal music globally, she excelled in various musical genres like Khyal, Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, Geet, Natyasangeet, etc.
